Is Brooke Shields Bound for London's Chicago ?
Brooke Shields, who has given new life to the Broadway revival of Wonderful Town, may be headed to London.

Fox News reports that Wonderful Town producers Barry and Fran Weissler have offered Shields the chance to play Roxie Hart in the West End production of Chicago. The news service says that Shields has accepted the role and will make her London stage bow in the spring.

Brooke Shields is back on Broadway in the revival of Wonderful Town, playing aspiring writer Ruth Sherwood. On Broadway Shields has also been seen in Grease! and Cabaret, and her Off-Broadway credits include The Vagina Monologues and The Exonerated. On screen Shields has been seen in “Pretty Baby,” “Endless Love,” “The Weekend,” “The Bachelor” and “King of the Gypsies.” She won an American Comedy Award for a guest appearance on “Friends,” which led to her hit series “Suddenly Susan.”

The West End company of Chicago — at the Adelphi Theatre — currently stars Michael French as Billy Flynn, Josefina Gabrielle as Roxie Hart, Paul Baker as Amos Hart, Anna-Jane Casey as Velma Kelly and Sharon D. Clarke as Mama Morton.

Shields Takes a Crack at 'Easter Egg'

The current TV ads for Wonderful Town feature the new star of the Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden and Adolph Green musical, Brooke Shields, looking glam and gorgeous--as one would expect the former cover girl to look. But on stage as Ruth Sherwood, the brassy character originated by Rosalind Russell and most recently played to perfection by Donna Murphy, she looks gawky, gangly and too tall (in her high heels she towers over most of the men in the cast). It's not easy to make Shields look like anyone's homely older sister, but her costumes and wig go a long way toward making her look uptight and unsexy.

The main question, of course, is whether Shields is up to acting, singing and dancing the demanding role. The verdict so far--and she has only been doing the show for two weeks--is a qualified yes. The star fares best with the physical comedy, especially in musical numbers like "Conga!" She earns laughs at other points in the show, but her characterization could be harder-edged; her Ruth still seems like too much of a softy. The actress would also benefit from watching Russell's rapid-fire delivery in old movies like His Girl Friday. As for Shields' singing, let's just say it's not bad compared to Russell's but pretty shabby compared to Murphy's.
For those who haven't seen the 1953 musical, it follows two sisters who come to New York City in the '30s in search of fame and fortune. Ruth (Shields) aspires to be a writer and doesn't have much luck with men; Eileen (Jennifer Hope Wills) wants to be a singer/dancer and is a man magnet. The two move into a basement apartment on Christopher Street and try to adapt to the big city. Early on they wonder if they ever should have left home in the lovely duet "Ohio." Ruth later meets editor Robert Baker (Gregg Edelman), who advises her to write what she knows. She finds material when she's sent on a wild goose chase to the Navy yard, where she meets a boatload of conga-loving sailors.
