Nicole
Kidman reveals why her children find her really rather embarrassing
THEY would seem pretty cool credentials if you're a kid - Mum
has won an Oscar and Dad is the biggest movie star in the world.
Keeping mum ... Nicole and her children.
But Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise still face a dilemma shared
by parents around the world when they go out in public with
their kids.
"They're embarrassed," Kidman said yesterday.
The Australian star said daughter Isabella, 12, and son Connor,
10, were sensitive when they went on outings with their famous
parents.
"They actually deny us," Kidman told Ellen DeGeneres
on the US comedienne's TV talk show.
"I go to Connor's soccer games and Bella's on the sidelines
and is like, 'Don't touch me'. Then I tease her and kiss her
and she gets really angry."
Kidman has been on the publicity trail in the US during the
past week to promote her latest movie Birth.
The actor also revealed a desire to swim with sharks, her habit
of snorting while laughing, the art of the Aussie accent and
defended Australia's native eucalyptus trees.
The topic of new reported beau, millionaire Steve Bing, didn't
come up but Kidman, usually guarded about her children, spoke
openly about Isabella and Connor.
"It's really hard, you try not to get them photographed.
So I'm very, very protective," Kidman said.
DeGeneres suggested an odd method Michael Jackson uses to guard
his children's identities.
"You can put masks on them, you know?" DeGeneres
said.
"Yeah," Kidman replied. "They would really let
me do that. They're the opposite. They're like 'We want to be
photographed'.
"I'm like 'Cut it out'. But they like the idea of being
on TV."
Kidman also admitted to being a daredevil and said she'd been
invited to swim with sharks off the Galapagos Islands, although
Isabella and Connor might veto the trip.
"I'm considering," Kidman said. "I have to get
permission from a 10-year-old and a 12-year-old."
The debate about the origin of eucalyptus trees arose when
Kidman spoke about Eucalyptus, the film she begins shooting
in Australia next month with Russell Crowe.
"It's called Eucalyptus, which is the name of an Australian
tree," Kidman said.
DeGeneres: "We have them here too. They're not your trees."
Kidman, jokingly, but correctly fired back: "They are
our trees. We brought them to you."
The actress also helped DeGeneres try an Australian accent
but eventually pleaded for her to stop.
The biggest laugh came as Kidman, the new face of fashion house
Chanel, let out a less than dainty snort.
"I have this terrible laugh sometimes where I honk and
I'm really trying to get out of the habit," an embarrassed
Kidman said.
"That's a great laugh," DeGeneres said. "We'll
make bumper stickers up that say 'Honk if you love Nicole'."
