Gellar
Won't Sing in Kelly's 'Southland' Musical
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to star
in the upcoming "Southland Tales," helmed by "Donnie
Darko" writer/director Richard Kelly. But the actress tells
Zap2it.com that she wont be singing in the mysterious film pitched
as a comedy/musical/thriller.
"No, you can all rest assured that I will not [sing],"
says the 27-year old actress. Although Gellar belted out a few
tunes during her TV "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" days,
she has no plans to revisit the experience. "That was the
most miserable experience of my entire [life]," she says
after explaining that she only had three weeks to prepare for
her song.
But even though "Southland Tales," doesn't begin
shooting until early next year, it's not enough time for Gellar
to prepare, saying, "For singing [that's] probably not
enough."
Gellar remains tight lipped about who will sing in the film
that also stars Seann William Scott, Jeanne Garofalo and writer/director
Kevin Smith.
However, Gellar does take a stab at explaining the musical
comedy's plot which revolves around a Los Angeles heatwave in
2008 that results in a massive Fourth of July party.
"It's less strange than 'Donnie Darko' -- that's kind
of an obvious statement -- a lot more characters, a lot more
interwoven story but again it's all in Richard Kelly's head.
I would not do justice," she says.
"Can you imagine trying to explain 'Donnie Darko' to people
before they saw it? 'Okay, it's about a guy and there's this
six-foot imaginary bunny,'" she laughs. "Richard Kelly
to me is just a genius."
"Donnie Darko" stars siblings Jake Gyllenhaal and
Maggie Gyllenhaal and was released in 2001, but re-released
again in theaters with an editor's cut this summer after becoming
an instant cult hit among college students.
Gellar's most recent film, "The Grudge" opens in
theaters nationwide on Friday, Oct. 22.
